Outdoor lighting can split into different types depending on your requirements, Task (to illuminate steps or keyholes), Ambient (to create a serene place to relax on darker evenings) and Feature (to illuminate a patio area, driveway, sculpture, fountain etc). Lighting the outside of your home also acts a deterrent to thieves as they risk being seen in well lit areas.

There are a number of light fittings on the market now in many different colours, styles, sizes and materials. It is possible to find something to suit the character of every house, whether it be a leaded style lantern for a country cottage or modern stainless steel LED light for a contemporary apartment block. You need to take into account the surrounding area the light has to fit without touching window frames, guttering, doorbells or number plaques. You also need to consider the size of light needed, a large wall light next to a small door will not look balanced where a small light next to a large door will not give a grand impression or enough light.

As outside lights can be on for long periods of time, low energy light bulbs can be fitted to save energy and money. PIR sensors can also be found on some lights which are activated when movement and heat are detected. Dusk til dawn sensors are also available which activate when darkness falls and switch themselves off once morning light appears.

LED lighting is a great option for adding additional light to steps, decking and patio areas. These lights should be recessed to avoid children and guests tripping over, any leads and cables should also be hidden for this reason. Post lights can be added along the side of a driveway or Drive-over lights can be recessed into the floor to create a lasting impression on all guests.
