The kitchen is the heart of any home and getting the balance right is important, there are 3 main types of light needed in a kitchen, Task (for food preparation), Ambient (for creating the correct atmosphere) and Feature (a crystal chandelier over an island or breakfast bar is now shown in most glossy home magazines). Good lighting can transform the feel of your kitchen and make tired cupboards instantly appear brighter and more up to date. A kitchen however is one of the most dangerous rooms in your home where hot liquids, sharp objects and electrical appliances are used so you must ensure you have enough light to see what you are doing.

For small to medium sized kitchens, one central multi arm light will give a good distribution or a multi head spotlight bar with allow light to be directed over the sink, fridge and worktop area etc. If you have a breakfast bar or island then a single pendant can be ideal for adding light, 3 single pendants in a row can create a fresh contemporary look, give you extra light and make a great feature.  For long or larger Kitchens, more than one central light may be required however the same principles can be applied.

Additional light can be added under cabinets to illuminate work surfaces or for a really modern look, add a strip of LED’s under your counter top or units at skirting level.
